Bruker launches microbe test kit following FDA clearance
By
LabPulse.com staff writers
Rapid sepsityper identification is crucial for the care of critically ill patients in order to reduce turnaround time for disease-specific treatment, noted Dr. Wolfgang Pusch, executive vice president of microbiology and diagnostics at Bruker. The new test kit can identify microbial species once a blood culture system has detected growth, but it does not test for resistance of antibiotic susceptibility.

Firm developing rapid gonorrhea test wins $19M prize
By
LabPulse.com staff writers
Visby Medical won the prize for its patient-side, disposable, molecular polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnostic device that detects Neisseria gonorrhoeae as well as markers of drug resistance. The device is a palm-sized, single-use, disposable device that detects N. gonorrhoeae and can determine whether the bacteria is susceptible to a single-dose antibiotic.

MicroRNAs predict problems in pneumonia patients
By
LabPulse.com staff writers
Identifying particular microRNAs -- small molecules involved in the regulation of gene expression -- using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing at the time patients are hospitalized with severe pneumonia could alert health professionals to risks and help prevent complications, reported Dr. Francisco Sanz, a pulmonologist at Consorci Hospital General Universitari de València, and colleagues. Testing is affordable, is readily available in hospitals, and takes from one to three hours, the researchers noted.

Urine tests at root of antibiotic misuse in Blue Cross study
By
Emily Hayes
For the study, researchers retrospectively evaluated the records of 2,733 hospitalized patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria in 46 Michigan hospitals. They examined how many patients received antibiotics after an abnormal urinalysis result, along with a range of clinical outcomes, including mortality, readmission rates, and emergency room visits. The group also looked at how long patients were hospitalized after a urine test.
