3D-printed swabs make the grade for COVID-19 testing
A multidisciplinary research team led by first author Cody Callahan of BIDMC's department of radiology and senior author Dr. Ramy Arnaout, PhD, of the institution's Clinical Microbiology Laboratories investigated over 150 swab designs and nearly 50 materials in a multiphase analysis that included preclinical evaluation, assessment of production considerations, and field testing in a clinical trial.

C-reactive protein test falls flat in newborns with suspected sepsis
The systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the accuracy of CRP for determining the risk of late-onset infection in hospitalized neonatal patients, most of whom were preterm and had low birthweight. In the studies included in the analysis, CRP was compared with microbiological blood culture results as a reference standard.

NIH-funded Lyme test promises better results, at the point of care
Results for an improved version of the mChip-Ld Lyme disease test, which is being developed with support from the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), were reported in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology online October 9.

Thermo Fisher Scientific unveils products at AACC 2019
To support the optimization of decisions and patient outcomes, Sensititre Aris HiQ AST utilizes broth microdilution to provide microbiology laboratories with accurate minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) results, according to the company. Thermo Fisher Scientific said that it has collaborated with pharmaceutical companies to include a large selection of antimicrobials, enabling access to new therapies for multidrug-resistant infections. Laboratories can also use the system to create their own custom AST plates from more than 300 antimicrobials in broad dilution ranges to consolidate and reduce offline testing, according to the firm.
