Qiagen has completed a U.S. government contract to equip public health laboratories with the QIAcuity digital polymerase chain reaction system for COVID-19 surveillance in wastewater.

Currently, 70% of U.S. states use QIAcuity for wastewater detection of SARS-CoV-2 infections, and more than 35 of the systems were shipped by the end of 2021, the company reported. The effort is part of a multimillion-dollar contract with the U.S. National Institutes of Health to supply labs with COVID-19 instruments and consumables through the end of 2021.

Qiagen reported that the platform can deliver results in two hours rather than the six required by competitive systems due to its proprietary nanoplate-based system.
