The Novo Nordisk Foundation, Wellcome, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have announced a collaboration to support scientific research and development (R&D) for accessible solutions to global health challenges.

The three organizations have each committed $100 million toward the three-year initiative, which was announced at the Novo Nordisk Foundation’s Global Science Summit being held in Helsingør, Denmark, May 6 and May 7.

To promote approaches that are affordable and accessible in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), initial funding will support solutions to address the health impacts of climate change, infectious disease and antimicrobial resistance, and developing “greater understanding of the interplay between nutrition, immunity, disease, and developmental outcomes,” according to a statement from the organizations.

The funding will also directly support researchers and institutions based in LMICs, including resources to advance locally relevant research, strengthen R&D capacity, and enable equitable access to existing tools and technologies.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation, Wellcome, and the Gates Foundation added that they will also seek opportunities to include both public and private partners, as well as potentially engage other philanthropic partners.
