Abbott’s new laboratory automation system has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval, the company announced in a statement.

The Abbott GLP Systems Track has a self-propelled single-sample carrier called CAR, which allows samples to move independently in self-propelled cars throughout the track without a belt, a feature the firm says reduces mechanical failures and allows for full customization.

The system was designed to meet high-volume needs; it can manage up to 25,000 test tubes per day, reducing turnaround time for test results, the company said.

“We know that our customers are seeking flexibility and scalability in their laboratory operations so they can meet ever-growing demand,” said Louis Morrone, executive vice president for Abbott’s core diagnostics business. “GLP Systems Track addresses those needs, enabling labs to increase performance and improve the overall quality of their operations.”

Abbott noted that GLP Systems Track is not approved by the FDA for use in U.S. blood donor and plasma testing laboratories.
