Volk is an assistant professor of pathology at UT Health San Antonio and senior vice president of clinical services at University Health System, also in San Antonio. She has been a member of CAP for more than 20 years and on the organization's board of governors since 2013. Up until her new term, Volk will continue to serve on the board of governors, among other leadership roles.

In a statement about the appointment, CAP said that Volk's areas of focus will include fostering collaboration between the organization's departments, boosting member engagement, improving the visibility of pathologists, and attracting new recruits to the specialty. The announcement precedes CAP's annual meeting, which is slated for September 21-25 in Orlando, FL. Dr. Patrick Godbey, founder, CEO, and laboratory director of Southeastern Pathology Assoc. in Brunswick, GA, is assuming the post of CAP president at the meeting; his term runs through 2021.
