Invitae has opened enrollment to U.S. consumers for free genetic testing and counseling services for four more conditions through its underwritten testing program: muscular dystrophy, hereditary prostate cancer, familial cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia, and lysosomal storage diseases.

These four conditions were chosen because testing is underutilized, so there is room to improve diagnosis and treatment, the company explained in a statement. Patients who meet eligibility criteria can access Invitae's company- and organization-sponsored testing programs by enrolling through their doctors. The sponsors get deidentified information and contact information from participating clinicians.

Neurogene, a gene therapy company developing treatments for rare neurological disorders, is on board as a sponsor for the lysosomal storage disease testing program. Additional sponsors will be announced as they come on board, the company said.

Altogether, Invitae currently has sponsored testing programs for 14 disease/disease areas. In June, the company announced tie-ups with Spark Therapeutics and X4 Pharmaceuticals for free testing for rare genetic diseases.
