Mayo Clinic said on Thursday that its Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has been accredited as a site for the diagnosis of primary ciliary dyskinesia, a rare and debilitating lung disease.
The accreditation came from the PCD Foundation, whose aim is to support increased research, accelerated diagnosis, improved health, and ultimately a cure for primary ciliary dyskinesia.
Mayo Clinic said its pathologists are experienced in the diagnosis of primary ciliary dyskinesia, given the number of cases they receive annually through its reference laboratory, Mayo Clinic Laboratories.
Mayo Clinic's Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology is the academic testing arm for Mayo Clinic Laboratories.
Mayo Clinic performs electron microscopy testing; its thoracic pathologists provide expert ultrastructure interpretation, which is an especially complex reading of the results due to the nature of primary ciliary dyskinesia and the way the symptoms present.
Mayo Clinic said it is evaluating additional tests to diagnose primary ciliary dyskinesia through continued research.
