July 28, 2021 -- Pathology artificial intelligence (AI) software developer PathAI has purchased Poplar, the management service organization of Poplar Healthcare, an anatomic pathology laboratory services provider.

For PathAI, the deal marks its entry into clinical diagnostics, adding access to traditional laboratory services and supporting the development and delivery of new and AI-driven products for drug development and patient care, according to the firm. Poplar's facilities, management team, and 350 employees will now comprise PathAI's diagnostics division, which will remain based in Memphis, TN, the company said.

The firms plan to further digitize Poplar's laboratory workflow and utilize PathAI's image analysis and algorithm development capabilities to develop new clinical applications.
