Researchers link protein group to end-stage renal disease
April 23, 2019 -- The presence of a group of inflammatory proteins could signify that patients with diabetic kidney disease may be at risk of progressing to end-stage renal disease, according to a study published April 22 in Nature Medicine.  Discuss
Blood test data show Lyme disease rising in some states
April 22, 2019 -- The demographics of tick-borne Lyme disease in the U.S. have been changing, with more testing and diagnoses in states that traditionally have had a low incidence of the infection, according to a study of blood-based testing by researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital and Quest Diagnostics.  Discuss
Antiopioid law could criminalize sales commissions for clinical lab patient referrals
April 18, 2019 -- A federal law passed to combat the opioid crisis could have unintended consequences by criminalizing sales commissions paid by clinical laboratories to their salaried sales representatives for patient referrals. Under the statute, such payments could be considered kickbacks for referrals.  Discuss
USPSTF questions blood lead screening in children, pregnant women
April 17, 2019 -- Blood testing for elevated lead levels is accurate, but there is not enough evidence to support the screening of asymptomatic pregnant women or asymptomatic children 5 years of age or younger, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has concluded in a final recommendation statement.  Discuss

April 16, 2019 -- The College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) are taking comments on a proposed revision of guidelines covering immunohistochemical testing for estrogen and progesterone receptors in breast cancer.  Discuss
Labs gear up to diagnose novel fungal infection
April 15, 2019 -- Clinical laboratories are being advised by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on how to handle a relatively new fungal infection, Candida auris, that is detectable only with complex tests such as mass spectrometry, sequencing, and novel polymerase chain reaction assays.  Discuss
Revenue from POC testing to outpace traditional IVD test market
April 9, 2019 -- New in vitro diagnostic (IVD) tests capable of being performed at the point of care (POC) for patients are making major inroads. In a new report, market research firm Kalorama Information shares how growth in POC testing is outstripping the growth of more traditional lab-based IVD tests, and how the POC test market will produce $30 billion in sales globally by 2023.  Discuss
Are commercial labs falling short in prenatal testing?
April 3, 2019 -- A study published April 3 in Genetics in Medicine found that commercial laboratories offering noninvasive prenatal screening (NIPS) for genetic disorders were not meeting guidelines published by the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. The researchers surveyed 10 labs and found inconsistencies and inaccuracies in how they reported NIPS measures.  Discuss
