Babesiosis testing makes strides with FDA clearances
May 15, 2019 -- There have been some interesting developments in the IVD market, specifically in the area of tick-borne diseases. Tick-borne diseases beyond Lyme are getting attention due to a lack of reliable diagnostic tests, but that's starting to change for at least one disease, babesiosis, according to Bruce Carlson of Kalorama Information.  Discuss
T2Bacteria panel proves itself, but will hospitals buy in?
May 14, 2019 -- The T2Bacteria panel was accurate and fast for detecting five common kinds of bacteria in the blood in a multicenter study published May 13 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, but questions remain about its value in practice and how it would be incorporated into a hospital's workflow.  Discuss
AMP, CAP show labs what they need to include in CYP2C9 tests
May 13, 2019 -- Labs should be including a broad set of CYP2C9 alleles in their own genotype tests, according to new joint recommendations published May 7 by the Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP) and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) in the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics.  Discuss
Smaller labs eye digital pathology options to improve workflow
May 9, 2019 -- As workloads increase in laboratory medicine, some pathology labs have considered harnessing new technologies to improve workflow and efficiency. One of the most promising technologies is digital pathology -- but it carries a price.  Discuss
Failed study leaves CRP test hanging as biomarker in bipolar depression
May 8, 2019 -- Investigators tried and failed to use C-reactive protein (CRP) as an inflammatory biomarker for picking patients with bipolar depression for drug treatment in a small study published May 8 in JAMA Psychiatry.  Discuss
Computational technique deployed for tumor tissue analysis
May 7, 2019 -- Stanford University researchers outlined a digital cytometry computational method that is useful for characterizing individual cells in intact tumor tissue samples. The technique could possibly predict response to cancer immunotherapy, according to a May 6 report in Nature Biotechnology.  Discuss
Blood tau test works as biomarker for deadly Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
May 6, 2019 -- Testing for the tau protein in blood could help predict the outlook for the rare and deadly Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a discovery that also has implications for research in Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders, researchers reported in JAMA Neurology on May 6.  Discuss
Breast cancer risk test may help show if chemo is worthwhile
May 2, 2019 -- A study published April 30 in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment provides more support for the use of genetic testing to tailor adjuvant treatment for breast cancer patients based on their predicted risk of disease recurrence.  Discuss
New screening approach emerges for pediatric genetic diseases
May 1, 2019 -- Combining DNA sequencing with a type of chemical analysis that provides information about the metabolic pathways underlying diseases is helpful for diagnosing rare pediatric conditions, according to a case report published April 30 in Cell Reports.  Discuss
NIH study outlines pathology of newly defined dementia disorder
April 30, 2019 -- Researchers with the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) have defined the pathology of a common dementia disorder that mimics Alzheimer's disease in an article published in Brain on April 30. They believe the condition warrants the inclusion of immunohistochemistry testing as part of the neuropathological evaluation of older adults.  Discuss
