Machine learning holds its own in breast cancer
July 29, 2019 -- A machine-learning method was able to predict biomarker expression in breast cancer through analyses of hematoxylin-eosin stained images alone, on par with standard immunohistochemistry, in a single-center, retrospective study of publicly available cases, Israeli researchers reported on July 26 in JAMA Network Open.  Discuss
Blood work tracks immunotherapy in GI cancers
July 26, 2019 -- Researchers in China have identified proteins in the blood that may help show which patients with cancer of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are responding to programmed cell death 1 checkpoint immunotherapy and, conversely, which ones are at risk of developing hyperprogressive disease and will have worse outcomes. Results were reported in JAMA Network Open on July 24.  Discuss
Random blood glucose tests poised for diabetes screening
July 25, 2019 -- A retrospective study of almost 1 million U.S. veterans shows the potential for population-wide random plasma glucose testing for large-scale screening, with the aim of catching diabetes early to better prevent and treat it.  Discuss
Microfluidic device could enable faster sepsis diagnosis
July 24, 2019 -- A microfluidic device being developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) could enable sepsis to be diagnosed more quickly and with a smaller sample of blood, according to a paper presented by MIT researchers at the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference in Berlin.  Discuss
USPSTF renews support for routine hepatitis B screening
July 23, 2019 -- Once again, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has strongly backed routine testing of all pregnant women for hepatitis B. The USPSTF updated its recommendation statement on testing on July 23 with an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association.  Discuss
AI-driven test helps make the call on pancreatic cysts
July 22, 2019 -- A test that incorporates the analysis of genetic mutations in pancreatic cyst fluid and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms is helpful for making the call on benign findings, with potential to spare patients from unnecessary surgeries, researchers reported in Science Translational Medicine on July 17.  Discuss
Popular rule-out test for thyroid cancer draws scrutiny
July 19, 2019 -- Researchers are questioning whether a commonly used gene expression classifier test for evaluating indeterminate thyroid nodules lives up to expectations, based on a systematic review and meta-analysis published online July 18 in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. The test is used to determine whether patients should be sent on for thyroid biopsy or surgery.  Discuss
Electronic health records make case for more kidney function testing
July 17, 2019 -- A large study of electronic health records showed that many patients do not get the follow-up tests they need after abnormal glomerular filtration rate results for a variety of reasons, including out-of-pocket costs for lab tests. Findings were published online July 16 in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.  Discuss
AAIC update: Where blood-based dementia tests stand in 2019
July 16, 2019 -- Against the shadowy backdrop of multiple failed trials in Alzheimer's disease, hope springs eternal for a reliable, noninvasive blood test for dementia, as shown by studies presented at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC) in Los Angeles on July 15.  Discuss
Artificial intelligence takes root in pathology
July 15, 2019 -- Artificial intelligence -- the simulation of human intelligence processes by software -- is reaching commercial pathology labs and has begun to significantly impact the way specimen images are read and diagnoses are made, bringing new understanding about the molecular basis of disease.  Discuss
