DCN Dx acquires Biomed Diagnostics
The purchase expands DCN Dx's reach into the point-of-use testing and sampling market by adding a number of tests to its portfolio, including InPouch TV for detection of Trichomonas vaginalis, Transport Media (VTM) for SARS-CoV-2 sample transport, and InTray VS COLOREX for testing for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Labcorp launches smart laboratory test reports
The reports are available for diseases that have significant health risks on their own or as co-morbidities for other conditions, such as diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Labcorp has also created reports for conditions that impact hospitalizations, such as community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

ATS, IDSA revamp pneumonia testing guidance
The new recommendations apply to the diagnosis and treatment of community-acquired pneumonia, from the time of signs and symptoms through treatment with antibiotics and follow-up chest imaging. They were published by a multidisciplinary team, including Dr. Joshua Metlay, PhD, chief of internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, October 1, 2019, Vol. 200:7, pp. e45-e65).

Coated, folded paper creates mobile lab for field tests
The coated paper worked significantly more efficiently and reliably than any type of dry, uncoated paper when testing biological materials in the field -- for example, for use following a natural disaster, wrote Daniel Regan, a research and development engineer at the University of Maine, and colleagues in the journal, a publication of the American Institute of Physics.

iCubate's iC-GN Gram-negative assay clears FDA
Bacteria picked up by the iC-GN test include Acinetobacter baumannii complex, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, while the antibiotic resistance markers screened by the test include K. pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) and New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM). Testing takes from two to three minutes, with results available in from 3 to 4.5 hours, according to the company.

T2Bacteria panel proves itself, but will hospitals buy in?
The prospective study of 1,427 patients in 11 centers tested the sensitivity, specificity, and speed of the T2Bacteria panel, which is an insert for T2 Biosystems' T2Dx miniaturized magnetic resonance instrument. The system directly tests blood for five types of bacteria ("ESKAPE pathogens") that cause bloodstream infections (BSI): Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli.
