Researchers validate antibody test for malaria, try similar approach for COVID-19

In the article, investigators shared their experience with the development and evaluation of a panel of serological markers to measure antibody responses to liver-stage parasites, or hypnozoites, which are found in people with malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax. This type of malaria is known to lie dormant, noted an international research team from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Australia, the Pasteur Institute in France, and Ehime University in Japan.

New field test for malaria drug resistance on horizon

Co-lead investigator Mindy Leelawong, PhD, and colleagues reported that they have validated a point-of-care platform for a field-deployable PCR instrument, based on a study showing the test can differentiate between the wild-type form of the malaria-causing parasite Plasmodium falciparum and mutant types that are resistant to chloroquine, an older treatment for the disease.
