Fort Worth, TX-based pharmacy software developer FDS has created a training program designed to prepare its pharmacist customers to administer COVID-19 tests.

Aiming to mobilize pharmacists as testers during this crisis and beyond, the program features short video modules to help refine skills in areas such as:

  • Safe specimen collection
  • Best practices for using personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Workflows for COVID-19 testing
  • Regulatory compliance for testing
  • Public health reporting

Subscribers of the company's MedBill Plus service can access the program beginning in mid-June; pharmacists/new subscribers who enroll before June 12 can also receive the training program at no additional charge. FDS said that it created the training program in recognition of research showing that licensed pharmacists feel unprepared for ordering and administering COVID-19 tests, even though they are permitted to do so legally by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

"We saw a need in the pharmacy community, and that became our priority," the company said in a statement.
