Inflammatory biomarker blood tests play the field in concussion
In the prospective study, 857 male high school and college-aged players underwent blood testing at baseline for a variety of inflammatory biomarkers. IL-6 and IL-1RA were significantly elevated in a cohort of 41 players with concussion six hours after the injury, compared with preinjury and postinjury levels, and also compared with matched controls, according to senior author Timothy Meier, PhD, an assistant professor of neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and colleagues.

BrainBox concussion test wins breakthrough status
The company's BrainBox TBI product includes a panel test for blood protein biomarkers that could be indicators of traumatic brain injury (TBI), including glial fibrillary acidic protein, neuron-specific enolase, and neurogranin. BrainBox TBI evaluates neurological features to make an overall assessment in a single score for mild TBI, or concussion.

Abbott, DOD advance research on concussion blood test
Abbott, the DOD, and the Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge in Traumatic Brain Injury (TRACK-TBI) network will evaluate the point-of-care blood test for Abbott's i-Stat Alinity system. The system performs a number of blood tests within minutes at a patient's bedside, using only two to three drops of blood. i-Stat is already in use within the military as well as at hospitals globally.
