Versant Diagnostics has expanded its footprint in the Pacific Northwest through partnership affiliation with Avero Diagnostics in Bellingham, WA.

Avero Diagnostics, also known as Northwest Pathology, provides anatomic pathology services to hospitals and clinics based in Bellingham, according to Versant in a news release. Avero adds to the Versant portfolio of pathology groups that currently cover subspecialty areas such as dermatopathology, gastrointestinal pathology, genitourinary pathology, general surgical pathology, hematopathology, renal pathology, and women’s health and gynecological pathology.

As part of the announcement, Versant said it provides necessary resources, infrastructure, and digital technology to multispecialty pathologists.

"The company has set out to build a trusted physician services company focused on digital pathology and leading the revolution to improve the precision, accuracy, and speed of diagnosis," Versant said, emphasizing that it was refocusing regional pathology services in the Pacific Northwest through the partnership.

"This collaboration with one of the Northwest’s leading pathology providers will expand physician and patient access to our nationwide network of preeminent specialists," said Versant CEO Jim Billington in the announcement.

In July 2022, following the December 2021 acquisition of Avero, Northwest Pathology adopted the Avero Diagnostics name for the combined business and service lines of Northwest Pathology, Northwest Laboratory, and Avero Diagnostics.

The integration of Northwest Pathology and Northwest Laboratory expanded Avero's test offerings in anatomic, clinical, and molecular pathology, and established one source of service for the company's national physician base, according to an Avero Diagnostics announcement at that time.

Other deals Versant announced in 2024 include the acquisition of Cutaneous Pathology, a dermatopathology practice based in Winston-Salem, NC, and the acquisition of Associate Pathologists of Joliet Ltd., a multispecialty pathology practice based in Joliet, IL.
