Illumina has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against BGI, claiming that the company's CoolMPS products copied its proprietary sequencing-by-synthesis chemistry.

Illumina filed the suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against BGI Genomics, BGI Americas, MGI Tech, MGI Americas, and Complete Genomics. Illumina claims BGI and its sister companies infringed on three of its patents.

Related patent suits are pending in Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the U.K., and the U.S. The U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board and the European Patent Office have upheld counterparts to these newly asserted patents when BGI, Complete Genomics, and others have challenged them, according to Illumina.
