Copan Diagnostics has launched PhenoMatrix TAG, its new colony selection software for automatically choosing isolated colonies for picking on plated media.

The software automatically detects and "tags" the best colonies to be picked for specimen workup, the company said. The software can interpret growth based on each laboratory's custom rules, presumptively identify colonial morphology, and preselect the best isolated colonies for workup, Copan added.

After defining the optimal colonies for selection, PhenoMatrix TAG communicates the colony coordinates to Copan's Colibri automatic colony picker, an instrument designed to automate the process. The Colibri device recently received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing in clinical microbiology.
