LabCorp has released a nucleic acid amplification (NAA) test for detecting the presence of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

LabCorp developed the test internally, and it is making it available according to guidance posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on February 29. The qualitative assay uses polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology and has been validated for use with respiratory samples, the company said. Results are available in three to four days.

The company is also able to perform the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 2019-nCoV real-time reverse transcription PCR diagnostic panel, it said.
