The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has restructured its Office of Laboratory Science and Safety.

First, the Office of Laboratory Science and Safety has been retitled the Office of Laboratory Systems and Response (OLSR). Effective September 13, several offices were abolished while others were established.

The changes suggest the need to advance the state of the national clinical laboratory system's quality and safety, data exchange, preparedness and response capacity, and workforce competency, according to details published September 19 in the U.S. Federal Register.

The new Systems approach also reinforces the CDC laboratory division's collaboration with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as part of its tri-agency partnership. It will continue to host the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee (CLIAC) and provide expertise in the development and revision of CLIA technical standards and voluntary guidelines for lab quality and safety.
